What we believe

At Southern Tier Church of Christ, we are a friendly, non-denominational, Bible based church that meets in Elmira, NY. We believe that evidence proves that the Bible is the infallible word of God. We believe that both the old and the new testaments are the living word of God. (Hebrews 4:12-13) We are committed to continually searching them in order to be shaped and influenced by  our Father. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) We go straight to God's word to establish our beliefs and practices. With that in mind, here are some anchor points we find in scripture:

  • We believe there is one God, manifested in three persons, Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

  • We believe in the God who first believed in us. He is the maker of heaven and earth and is the creator of us all. (Psalms 100:3)

  • We believe in Jesus Christ who died and rose for us. He is our Lord and Savior. (1 Timothy 1:15; Romans 10:9-10)

  • We believe in the Holy Spirit who lives in us and enriches us. (Romans 8:9; 2 Timothy 1:7)

  • We believe in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

  • We believe in grace. None of us are good enough to be good enough. God did for us through the cross of Christ, what we could not do for ourselves. It is by grace we are brought into relationship with the Father. (Ephesians 2:8-10)

  • We believe in faith. Faith is the reaching hand of the flawed man. It is believing that God is and that He rewards those who seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)

  • We believe that confession, repentance and baptism are all integral expressions of faith involved in initially coming to God. (Acts 2:36-39; Romans 10:9-10)

  • We believe it is the Father's intent that no one live as an isolated individual, but that we are a part of a vibrant community of faith known as the church - - the body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:13)

  • We believe that community is expressed by supporting and encouraging each other. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

  • We believe that one of the purposes of our meeting together on the 1st day of the week is to celebrate the life-giving sacrifice of Jesus in communion. (1 Corinthians 11:23-26)
